BASENJI DOG
The Basenji dog breeds was originally found in the Congo. Clever and endearing, he’s a good companion for the person or family who can stay a step ahead of him. The Basenji is commonly known as the “barkless dog” because it doesn’t bark, but when he is excited, it makes a noise that sounds like a yodel. Moreover many Basenji are dominant and pushy toward other dogs of the same sex.
BASENJI TEMPERAMENT AND APPEARANCE
- Some consider Basenjis to have terrier-like mannerisms because they are feisty for a hound.
- More often these dog are considered catlike in mannerisms: clever, inquisitive, stubborn, independent, and reserved.
- Dog hunting roots are very evident, as they love to chase and trail.
- The dog need regular mental and physical stimulation lest it become frustrated and destructive.
- Basenjis may be barkless, but they are not mute dog.
- They dogs do make a sort of yodel, howl, and shriek—and occasionally bark, but just one or two “fox barks” at a time.
- The dog breeds gets along fairly well with other dogs, but often poorly with other Basenji.
- This dog is an active dog that needs mental and physical exercise daily.
- Their needs can be met by a long walk followed by a vigorous game or by free-running in a safe enclosed area.
